Effect of histamine on oxygen consumption in guinea pig taenia coli.

چکیده
In 1953, Bülbring noted that the smooth muscle of teania coli from guinea pig showed an increase in oxygen consumption associated with tension development when stimulated by a drug such as acetylcholine, histamine or eserine (1). Recently Urakawa and his co workers found that high concentration of potassium in Tyrode solution induced an in crease in oxygen consumption accompanied by a rise of muscle tension (2), and they con sidered that Ca ions which entered the muscle cells through the membrane depolarized by high K might play an essential role in increasing oxygen consumption independently of an increase in muscle tension (3). The present experiments were undertaken to investigate effects of histamine and its antagonist on oxygen consumption, muscle tension and electrical activity in taenia coli, and the relationship between the resulting increase in oxygen consumption and Ca move ment was discussed.

Mechanism of spasmolytic activity of a fraction of Sarcostemma brevistigma Wight.
The effect of chloroform soluble fraction (F-A) of twigs of Sarcostemma brevistigma on contractions induced by KCl, histamine, and acetylcholine in the isolated guinea pig ileum and taenia coli smooth muscles has been evaluated. F-A (19.5 microg/ml) significantly inhibited the contraction induced by 40 mM KCl to the extent of 87.6% in the isolated guinea pig ileum. In the isolated guinea pig il...
متن کاملEvidence for histamine and 5-hydroxytryptamine like effects of MK-212 on guinea pig ileum, taenia coli and rat fundus strip.
MK-212 (1 x 10(-7)M -- 1 x 10(-5)M) produced dose-dependent contractions of guinea pig ileum, taenia coil and rat fundus strip. The responses to MK-212 in all three preparations were blocked competitively by cyproheptadine (1 x 10(-8)M) a 5-HT receptor antagonist. Mepyramine (1 x 10(-8)M)-H1 receptor antagonist also inhibited competitively the responses of guinea pig ileum and taenia coli to MK...
متن کاملEffect of lighium substitution for sodium on oxygen consumption of guinea pig taenia coli in high K medium.
It was reported that high potassium solution (isotonic, 40 mm) induced a tension development in guinea pig taenia coli accompanied by an increase in oxygen consumption (1). Intracellular Ca space increased in high K medium as well as cellular Ca fraction which did not exchange within 4 minutes. The latter is referred to "tightly bound fraction (TBF)" (2). By addition of ouabain (2.5 X 10-'m) to...
متن کاملAntihistaminic Effect of Bunium persicum on Guinea Pig Tracheal Chains
In a previous study, the relaxant and anticholinergic (functional antagonism) effects of Bunium persicum (B. persicum ) have been demonstrated on guinea pig tracheal chains. To elucidate the other mechanisms responsible for this relaxant effect, the inhibitory effect of this plant on histamine H1 receptors was examined in this study. The antihistaminic effects of aqueous and macerated extracts,...
متن کاملEffects of ouabain and metabolic inhibiting factors on Ca distribution during K-induced contracture in guinea pig taenia coli.
It was reported that an application of high-K (isotonic, 40 mm) caused an increase in oxygen consumption accompanied by an increase in tension change in guinea pig taenia coli (1) and that these changes were reversibly abolished by a depletion of Ca from the high-K medium and Sr could replace Ca only for oxygen consumption (2). These results suggest that Ca entering smooth muscle treated with h...
